Civil ceremonies are conducted by the Major or civil registrars in Italian and they are legally recognized also in your home Country.
Until recently civil weddings could only be celebrated in town halls, but their spread in the last years has led many Italian municipalities to give the authorization for civil ceremonies to other places too (villas, historical buildings, seaside, etc.).
If the couple has been married before, it is essential that 300 days have passed since the divorce date to marry civilly in Italy. The bureaucratic procedure should start from 3 to 6 months before the chosen date.
The civil ceremony lasts approximately 20-30 minutes. Two witnesses and one official interpreter are requested by law for the couples who do not speak Italian.
